The following and the next few posts are just some older cakes. Some are even from a few years ago when I first started playing around in the cake world :-)  Excuse the really bad pictures! When I first started out, I didn't think anyone else would be looking at these so you will see messy kitchen backgrounds in some of these and maybe some of my family in the distance ;-)

Minimus and Magnus, United

Seven years ago I received a Mother's Day gift that, besides my Henckel knife, has been my constant kitchen companion. She has been (and, yes, of course she's a girl!) a dependable, loyal, life and, sometimes, sanity saving bestie since the day we met. My little girl has had periods, like all of us, when she wobbled and jiggled and struggled with some of the heavier loads and, I'm sorry to say, I took advantage of her little frame and pushed her to her limits many times. Now, I am talking about my little, hard-working, 4.5 quart Kitchenaid mixer and I'm writing this with a small glisten of a tear in my eye. Not that I'm replacing or, worse even, abandoning my loyal friend; just bringing in some reinforcements to give her a well deserved rest. Oh, Minimus, we welcome the new member to our little kitchen circle, Magnus. Welcome big guy and I look forward to years of mixing, kneading, whipping, and companionship!

Cute couple, aren't they?

Toms Style Your Sole

We had an absolutely fabulous time at Columbia Street Mercantile during Spring for Art! My first public "event" cake and the turnout was fantastic. It was astounding how many people actually tried to pick up the shoe to try it on only to realize that it was sugar! I couldn't ask for a better compliment.  For all of those who admired and tasted my donation cake and cupcakes, thank you so much! I hope to hear from some of you soon :-)

Thanks so much Camille (camillereneephotography.blogspot.com) for taking the sweet pictures!

Ready, set, cake!

This is the culmination of a 3 day cake marathon! Baby rattles, hippie tie dye, car races, and farm animals - I came, I caked, I conquered, tee hee. But, of course, it didn't go off without a little bit of drama. Can you guess which one was almost the disaster?

Anemone, who knew it was a flower too?

I have never had a strength for plants. People who are pros at gardening and such tell me, "Just plant this plant or this flower, nobody can kill it." Well, guess what? I am the one person that can kill just about any plant (I've even killed a cactus!). Oh, and fish, but I digress.

Then, I received a cake request to match a bridal shower invitation that had a beautiful ruffly, green, tropical type flower that was, I was informed, not a hibiscus, which is one of the few exotic flowers that I do know, because it didn't have that long middle thingy that collects all the pollen (see how botanically educated I am?). So, I decided to just start cutting shapes and ruffling edges and gluing everything together and I got something that was pretty close to the flower on the invitation.

After scrambling desperately to get another cake out the door (mix up with deliver times) and, sadly, forgetting to take a picture of that one, I return to my ruffly, green, tropical type flowers and began assembling them on the cake when my husband came through the kitchen and said, "Hey, you are just like Mother Nature or something when it comes to cake!" Huh, who ever would have thought that I would finally get a green thumb (quite literally seeing that my hands are still neon green from the food coloring, he he) doing something like cake?

P.S. I finally found out these flowers are called anemones! Did you know that? I was pretty surprised.
